An Introduction to Roulette

There are a few different theories concerning the origin of roulette. The most common idea is that roulette was invented in a French monastery, which makes sense considering roulette translates to “small wheel” in French.

The roulette wheel has 38 spaces total. Numbers 1-36 are either colored red or black and the 0 and 00 spaces are green. Players are able to make bets using roulette chips. Each player's roulette chips are individually colored so the dealer and the players can keep track of all the bets on the table.

There are a variety of bets available to roulette players. Roulette bets are classified as either inside or outside. Inside bets include individual numbers (35-1), splits (17-1), trios (11-1), and corners (8-1). These wagers allow players to bet on their favorite number(s). Players can also make outside wagers including red/black, even/odd, and high/low (all 2-1) plus players can also wager on what column or third the winning number will be in (both pay 3-1).

Fun fact: the most popular number in roulette is 17! If you look at the layout, you’ll notice that 17 is directly in the middle.
