‘Rivers Gives’ Volunteers Support Youth Programming at August Wilson African American Cultural Center
Rivers Casino Team Members will serve as ambassadors and assist with educational activities

The Rivers Gives team from Rivers Casino continues its monthly volunteer efforts with a day of service at The August Wilson African American Cultural Center on Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Rivers Gives volunteers will support The AWAACC’s youth programming, serving as on-site ambassadors. Team Members will greet visiting students, guide them through the Center’s active exhibits and assist with hands-on educational activities.

The AWAACC is a nonprofit, multidisciplinary arts organization dedicated to the celebration of the African American journey and its profound impact on culture in America and beyond. Through festivals, exhibitions and educational programs, the Center presents artistic expression rooted in the prestige, authority and vision reflected in the work of renowned Pittsburgh native playwright August Wilson.

“We’re excited to welcome the Rivers Gives team to the Center and appreciate their support of our overall mission and youth program,” said Janis Burley, president and CEO of The AWAACC. “The casino’s volunteers will aid us in creating meaningful experiences for students exploring art, history and creativity.”

“Our partnership with The August Wilson African American Cultural Center reflects Rivers Casino’s commitment to education, arts programs and cultural enrichment,” said Dr. Rahmon Hart, director of community relations at Rivers Casino Pittsburgh and board member of The AWAACC. “We’re proud to support programming that works to inspire young people and celebrate the power of artistic expression and storytelling.”

Rivers Gives is the casino’s long-running community outreach program in which Team Members report to work at a local nonprofit instead of on the gaming floor.

In January, the Rivers Gives team volunteered at Community Kitchen Pittsburgh, assisting with meal prep and supporting the nonprofit’s culinary training programs and mission to create accessible pathways to employment.

About August Wilson African American Cultural Center

The August Wilson African American Cultural Center is a nonprofit cultural organization located in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District that generates artistic, educational, and community initiatives that advance the legacy of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson.

One of the largest cultural centers in the country focused exclusively on the African American experience and the celebration of Black culture and the African diaspora, the nonprofit organization welcomes more than 100,000 visitors locally and nationally. Through year-round programming across multiple genres, such as the annual Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, Black Bottom Film Festival, AWCommunity Days, TRUTHSayers Speaker Series, and rotating art exhibits in its galleries, the Center provides a platform for established and emerging artists of color whose work reflects the universal issues of identity that Wilson tackled, and which still resonate today.

Major support for AWAACC’s operations is provided by the Richard King Mellon Foundation, Henry L. Hillman Foundation, Heinz Endowments, and the Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD). AWAACC’s programming is made possible by generous support from its donors. For a complete list, visit www.awaacc.org.
