Casino Chef to Compete in Annual Food Pantry Brunch Challenge

PITTSBURGH – January 26, 2015 – In this case, too many cooks in the kitchen will be a great thing. On Saturday, January 31, Rivers Casino banquet chef Michael Shimek will compete in the fourth annual Food Pantry Brunch Challenge and all proceeds from the event will benefit Northside Common Ministries.

Chef Shimek will go head-to-head against nine local chefs to create a delicious brunch dish for 300 guests. The catch? Chefs can only use items found on food pantry shelves, such as canned vegetables, pasta noodles, boxed milk, cereals, beans and canned meats.

“This challenge forces you to think outside of the box and come up with creative substitutions,” said Shimek. “It benefits a terrific cause, and I'm looking forward to preparing a winning dish.”

The Food Pantry Brunch Challenge will take place on stage at the New Hazlett Theater from 11 a.m.—1 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at www.northsidefoodpantry.org

The Rivers Casino Community Champions will show the Northside Common Ministries some additional love on Wednesday, January 28. More than 20 volunteers will be on-site to cook and serve a meal for homeless families and individuals. A second group of Community Champions will donate their time and talents to complete a painting project at the Northside Common Ministries facility.

Volunteering at the Northside Common Ministries is a part of Rivers Casino’s ongoing community service outreach program. Each month, Team members assist in a service project that benefits the Pittsburgh Community. Most recently, Rivers Team Members partnered with the Southwestern Veterans Center for its Presents for Patients event.
