Casino volunteers help prep and pack food for local families in need

Tomorrow, Rivers Casino’s volunteer program, Rivers Gives, will visit the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank (GPCFB) from 9 a.m. to noon to volunteer in support of the nonprofit’s mission to combat food insecurity throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Rivers Gives volunteers will work alongside the GPCFB team sorting, packing and organizing food for distribution through the organization’s extensive network of community partners. Their efforts will help provide households throughout the region experiencing food insecurity with healthy, nutritious meals.

Established in 1980 amid the decline of Pittsburgh’s steel industry, part of GPCFB’s founding mission was to address rising food insecurity during that historic period of economic hardship for the city. Today, with more than 1,000 partners across the 11 Southwestern Pennsylvania counties it serves, GPCFB continues advancing its mission to provide reliable access to nutritious food for its neighbors in need.

“We’re grateful to once again host the Rivers Gives team at the Food Bank,” said Kara Davidson, event, outreach and education specialist at GPCFB. “Volunteerism plays a central role in helping us provide reliable access to nourishing meals and essential resources for our neighbors. Partnerships like this are invaluable to ensure families throughout the area have the food and tools they need to thrive.”

For more than a decade, Rivers Casino has proudly supported GPCFB, partnering with the organization through hands-on volunteer service and community initiatives centered on fighting hunger and increasing access to wholesome food for communities across the region.

Rivers Gives is the casino’s long-running community outreach program in which Team Members report to work at a local nonprofit instead of on the gaming floor.

Last month, Rivers Gives volunteers partnered with Allegheny CleanWays for a river cleanup, joining the nonprofit in removing litter, debris and recyclable materials from the Ohio River shoreline behind the casino and in nearby areas.
