Team Members participate in “Take Your Child to Work Day” while supporting local programs

PITTSBURGH — April 24, 2018 — On Thursday, April 26, the Rivers Casino Community Champions will link arms with not one, not two, but three local nonprofit organizations to take to the great outdoors and beautify the Pittsburgh region. In honor of “Take Your Child to Work Day,” Team Members will have the unique opportunity to bring their children along for the community service expeditions. Volunteer opportunities include assisting the North American Rock Garden Society and the National Aviary in a joint venture, or supporting the Mexican War Streets Society.

North American Rock Garden Society/National Aviary

The North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS) and the National Aviary will team up on April 26 to offer Rivers Casino Community Champions and their kids the chance to make a difference locally and to our environment as a whole. Efforts will include picking up spattered lava rock at Mechanics Retreat Park on Buena Vista and Jacksonia streets followed by an interactive presentation on how to protect the habitats of cherished bird species. The volunteers will also be able to help create a small craft project, and learn how a horticultural specialist manages exotic plants.

NARGS is a center for gardening enthusiasts interested in varieties of plant life that grow well among rocks. Through its publications, meetings and garden visits, NARGS provides extensive opportunities for both beginners and experts to expand their knowledge of plant cultivation and propagation, and of the construction, maintenance and design of special interest gardens.

The National Aviary is America’s only independent nonprofit zoo dedicated exclusively to birds. Located in Allegheny Commons Park on Pittsburgh’s historic North Side, the National Aviary’s diverse collection comprises more than 500 birds representing more than 150 species from around the world, many of them threatened or endangered in the wild.

Also featured at the National Aviary on April 26 is the Alcosan Scholastic Outreach & Education Program. Alcosan will offer a table with important environmental information and green-centered coloring books for the kids.

“I have been an artist and gardener my whole life,” said Susan Benn, longtime community green space activist for Pittsburgh’s North Side. “I’m committed to working with the community by coordinating activities that promote an understanding of the significance of natural habitats and the importance of green spaces. I am so excited to have the Rivers Casino Team Members and their kids join us this month!”

Mexican War Street Society

In addition to the NARGS and National Aviary projects, Team Members will also have the chance to work alongside members of the Mexican War Street Society while weeding thousands of dandelions at Mechanics Retreat Park.

Founded in 1969, the Mexican War Streets Society (MWSS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to showcasing and preserving the colorful personality of homes, promoting resident camaraderie, and inviting visitors and new residents to discover one of Pittsburgh’s most historic communities.

“This month, our Team Members are able to bring their little ones along for the ride,” said Rahmon Hart, director of community relations at Rivers Casino. “Without the support and warm welcome from NARGS, the National Aviary and Mexican War Street Society, this exciting day we have planned wouldn’t be possible!”
