Corr Named Champion In 2017 WPBA Rivers Casino Open
Pittsburgh’s Casino Hosted 48 Top Women Billiards Players in Weekend Tournament
PITTSBURGH — April 24, 2017 — Karen Corr defeated Siming Chen in the thrilling finale of four days of competitive play at Rivers Casino during the 2017 Women’s Professional Billiards Association (WPBA) Rivers Casino Open on Sunday, April 23.
WPBA fans from across the globe logged on to catch all of the live tournament play including Sunday's semifinals and finale. The first of two semifinal rounds saw Siming Chen, of China, defeat Brittany Bryant, of Canada. In the second semifinal round of the tournament, Karen Corr, of Ireland, narrowly defeated top-ranked Line Kjorsvik, of Norway. The finale pitted Corr against Chen, with Corr besting Chen in a sudden death match.
“Corr’s victory was wonderfully played in an exciting finale that went into a sudden death match to determine the champion,” said Belinda Calhoun, president of the WPBA. “Rivers Casino was an excellent host and our pros enjoyed returning to Pittsburgh to compete in the 2017 WPBA Rivers Casino Open.”
Corr’s win caps off five days of WPBA action at the casino, beginning with a charity pro-am on Wednesday, April 19 that benefitted the Friends of the Riverfront charity. Participants played in a friendly match alongside the pros and then had the opportunity to challenge individual pros in a one-on-one game.
Matches between 48 of the WPBA’s top players took place each day from April 20—23, leaving Corr and Chen to shoot it out in the electrifying final event that went all the way to a sudden death match. Corr was presented with the championship trophy in front of a crowd of billiards fans and casino guests.
“The 2017 WPBA Rivers Casino Open was a thrilling tournament and the energy and excitement in the room characterized what the Rivers experience is all about,” said Craig Clark, general manager of Rivers Casino. “Our guests really enjoy the wide range of entertainment we proudly provide and being able to host the top professional billiards players from around the world is just another example of the diverse entertainment available at Rivers Casino.”
