LAUGHTER REALLY IS THE BEST MEDICINE

Comedy Night at Rivers Casino to Benefit Parkinson Foundation

PITTSBURGH March 24, 2014 — Help fight Parkinson’s disease with a good laugh at the National Parkinson Foundation Western Pennsylvania (NPFWPA) annual Comedy Night fundraiser on Saturday, April 5, at Rivers Casino. Presented in conjunction with Parkinson’s Awareness Month, proceeds from this event will help to expand programs, outreach and awareness within the communities NPFWPA serves.

“Mental health is extremely important for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease (PD),” says NPFWPA Executive Director, Barbara Farrell. “Mood, depression and anxiety can have even more impact than motor impairments commonly associated with the disease.” NPFWPA hosts its annual Comedy Night not only to raise funds to support its mission but also to demonstrate that laughter can enhance quality of life and help those with PD to live well.

After watching loved ones become frustrated and struggle with the disease, local comedian Andy Picarro recognized how important laughter becomes when you’re dealing with a debilitating disease and the mental health issues that come along with it. Inspired by the television show “Seinfeld” and his love for being onstage, Picarro is an honest and conversational comic who recently returned to his hometown of Pittsburgh.

Since the company you keep as a comedian is important, Picarro is excited to share the stage with friends and fellow comedians that are sure to leave the audience in stitches:

  • Though host Ray Zawodni is the youngest of the group, he is a natural performer who is just as funny under the stage lights as he is during a car ride with friends.
  • Named “Best Local Comedian” by Pittsburgh Magazine for the past two years, headlining act Aaron Kleiber made his stand-up national television debut in “Gotham Comedy Live” with host Jim Breuer in July 2013 and remains a fixture in the booming Pittsburgh comedy scene due to regular performances at The Improv.
  • An up-and-coming comic who can work with anyone in any situation, Molly Sharrow delivers fantastic jokes and a healthy dose of sarcasm for crowds.
  • Performing for over ten years now, Bryson Turner is the guy who loves talking to people and making them feel better about themselves. Picarro says that “both Pittsburgh and New York comics like him, and that’s saying something cause most comics don’t like anyone.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance by visiting www.pfwpa.org or calling 412-837-2542; tickets will also be available at the event. For $125, VIP ticket holders can enjoy an exclusive Drum Bar reception with hors d’oeuvres and cash bar from 5—6 p.m. as well as a buffet-style dinner from 6—7:30 p.m. and reserved seating at the 8 p.m. show. For $65, general admission ticket holders can choose seats on a first-come, first-served basis when the doors open at 7:45 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show.

LOCAL PLAYER WINS PITTSBURGH POKER OPEN WINTER SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP

LOCAL PLAYER WINS PITTSBURGH POKER OPEN WINTER SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP

“Poker Night in America” Attracts the Largest Tournament Prize Pool Ever at Rivers Casino

PITTSBURGHDec. 3, 2013 – Pittsburgh’s Larry Pileggi dominated the first televised poker tournament ever held in The ‘Burgh. The local poker player obliterated a talented final-table lineup, consisting of two other Pittsburgh players and three from out of town. He wrapped up his victory in slightly more than three hours, a lightning-fast pace.

For his victory, the poker champion collected $71,782, plus a crystal trophy presented by the host property, Rivers Casino. Pileggi was accompanied at the final table by his wife Leah, which meant the couple was able to share the special moment together.

This was Pileggi’s first major tournament win, but hardly his first foray into the poker spotlight. He had previously cashed at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. However, this victory was truly special, taking place at the biggest poker tournament ever held in his hometown of Pittsburgh.

Pileggi defeated Dave Tannenholtz from Las Vegas in heads-up play. As the runner up, Tannenholtz’s consolation prize was $35,890. The top six finishers were as follows:

  1. Larry Pileggi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) – $71,782
  2. David Tannenholtz (Las Vegas, Nev.) – $ 35,890
  3. Joseph Couden (Columbus, Ohio) – $20,098
  4. Douglas MacKinnon (East Amherst, N.Y.) – $17,227
  5. Donald Trenney (Moon Township, Pa.) – $15,792
  6. Daniel Hill (Pittsburgh, Pa.) – $12,920

The championship event won by Pileggi was a $1,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament which took place over a four-day period. It was the final event on the 11-day schedule held throughout the end of the Thanksgiving weekend.

This was the second time Rivers Casino has hosted the Pittsburgh Poker Open series. The previous “Summer Series” was held last August. This slate of 28 events, appropriately called the “Winter Series,” may become an annual tradition.

Rivers Casino is “Poker Night in America’s” third television shooting location. The initial production took place in August in Upstate New York. The second television show was filmed in Reno, just prior to the Pittsburgh event. Broadcast dates of all three events will be announced soon.

The Pittsburgh Poker Open tournament series concludes this Tuesday, Dec. 3, with a high-stakes cash game, which will be filmed for television on a delayed broadcast. Already scheduled to appear are: Joe Cada (2009 world champion), Greg “Fossilman” Raymer (2004 world champion), Steve Dannenmann (2005 WSOP runner up), Darvin Moon (2009 WSOP runner up), Dan O’Brien (2010 Player of the Year) and others.

RIVERS CASINO ANNOUNCES ‘SURVIVORMAN’ PERFORMANCE EVENT

Discovery Channel’s Les Stroud Comes to Pittsburgh’s Casino

PITTSBURGHMay 20, 2013 — Survivorman’s next big adventure will bring him to the ’Burgh — more specifically, Rivers Casino. Stroud’s adventures take him through climates that range from one extreme to another — from stiflingly humid jungles in Costa Rica to the bitter cold of the Arctic, and from the arid conditions of the Sonoran Desert to the saturated swamplands of Georgia. He is the only producer in the history of television to produce an internationally broadcast series entirely written, videotaped and hosted alone.

At the Rivers event, Stroud and his band will give a live performance of his unique art-folk rock and exceptional blues harmonica skills. Guests will be treated to a question-and-answer session with Stroud, who will share some of his favorite stories from his many adventures. All attendees will also have the chance to get up close and personal during a meet and greet with Survivorman himself.

Approximately 300 guests will attend the June 8 event, and only Rivers Casino Rush Reward members are eligible to win tickets. The event will take place in Rivers Casino’s riverfront ballroom, which features the city of Pittsburgh as its brilliant backdrop.

Survivormania: How to Win

Every day from now through May 28, Rush Reward members are invited to swipe their cards at Rivers’ kiosk for a chance to win in the $100,000 Survivormania Grand Finale. Win tickets to the Survivorman show on June 8 (tickets will not be sold to the public), Free Slot Play and much more. The grand prize drawing will occur May 29 at 8 p.m., when 10 finale winners will compete for a top prize of $10,000 or the trip of a lifetime — an exotic excursion.

Players can swipe their card one time per promotional day any time between 8 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. For interested guests who are not already members, Rush Rewards is free to join, and enrollment is available at the Players Club window.

“Survivormania gives players the chance to win the trip of a lifetime and be a part of a one-of-a-kind performance by Les Stroud,” said Craig Clark, general manager of Rivers Casino.
